NCAA Picks 2008-2009: week 8 results, week 9 schedule

I made an executive decision this week that will displease at least one of you: all side wagers are being tossed out.

There wasn’t a lot of enthusiasm for them, and the idea of keeping a tally on something that doesn’t count seems stupid to me. So, you’ll actually have to pick well if you want to win.

My decision is final. Accusations of a rigged game will not sway me otherwise, no matter how pathetic and/or amusing they are. You can take out your agression on me in this poll if you’d like:

Rusty's management of this contest is most reminiscent of:

  • Bill Lumbergh (38%, 3 Votes)
  • Mike "Viper" Metcalf (25%, 2 Votes)
  • Dick Cheney (25%, 2 Votes)
  • Bobby "The Brain" Heenan (13%, 1 Votes)
  • Morris Buttermaker (-1%, 0 Votes)

Game of the Week

Penn State at Ohio State. Not only do we get to find out if Penn State is for real, but there’s a 50-50 chance that Joe Paterno will lose control of his bowels on national television. Always worth watching.

How to enter your picks

You read the rules, right?

The short version:

  • You’re picking which teams won’t cover their spread. You must choose at least one team not to cover unless there is only one game being played that week.
  • You’re also entering a predicted score for the Game of the Week, which cannot be the same as a predicted score another player enters.

Example:

Florida and Clemson don’t cover. Alabama wins the GOTW 19-14.

If I entered that, that means I think Florida and Clemson either would lose or not cover their spreads, and you then wouldn’t be able to predict a 19-14 win for Alabama.

  1. I applaud your decision – even if this means you’re now #1.

    Won’t Cover: LSU, Georgia Tech

GotW: Stadium explodes and both overrated teams are destroyed.

  2. I also agree with this decision. I understand the wagers were fun for some, but to me they made actually making picks seem inconsequential and not worth the effort. (Not that I’m doing it well, but still…)

  3. Tony Ventry

I agree with the call, and you are right that there is no point in calculating something that doesn’t mean anything anyway. Any betting types will have to resort to the traditional currencies of betting, like beer, shame, or labor (e.g., washing the dog).

Which reminds me of the only bet that I haven’t yet paid up on: in ‘99, I agreed to wear a shower cap around campus for a week if the Falcons lost the Superbowl. We couldn’t find a Broncos logo’d shower cap, and fortunately the other party didn’t force me to wear a plain one. But, I still owe him.

Doesn’t cover: Kansas, Minnesota, Florida, Texas, Georgia Tech, FSU, LSU, Tulsa

    GOTW: PSU 13, tOSU 34

  4. My bet during the 1999 Super Bowl was I’d do a shot every time Terrell Davis rammed it up the Falcons’ asses. Did I ever pay for that one.

  6. Reginald

Kansas, Texas, LSU, FSU and wont cover.GOTW: Penn 28 OSU 17
Sorry about last week. I support your decision.

  7. That Rutgers line seems wrong.

Oklahoma, LSU, Ohio St, and Rutgers (if the line is correct) won’t cover.

GOTW Penn St 27, OSU 20.

  8. Ah shit, you’re right. That was supposed to be Pitt by 10. Fixed.

  9. Damn, I was hoping for a gimme pick! ;)

  10. won’t cover

  18. won’t cover:

    ball state
    oklahoma
    Pitt
    Ga Tech
    FSU
    TCU
    Ohio State

    GOTW: PSU 31 – Ohio State 25

  19. rugbyfan

    Only FSU covers.

    GOTW: FSU: 5187 VT: 0

Notice how the only person who realized that this game is rigged, finally climbs into the lead, and then almost immediately, the rules are changed so he can’t win?

    Interesting strategy Rusty.
