NCAA Picks 2009-2010: week 8 results, week 9 schedule

I had dinner reservations in Epcot Center this past Saturday I’d made before I knew what time the UT-Bama game would be, and missed the last few minutes. Naturally, my Vols came within a blocked field goal of beating the number one team in the country on its home field while I was gone. So it’s probably my fault they lost.

I dropped Garrett, kwakkwak and rugby from the standings since Garrett quit last week and the other two haven’t submitted anything since week 1.

Last week’s tiebreaker question was “How many passing touchdowns will all PAC 10 defenses allow combined?” It turned out not to be necessary, but the answer was 13. Carl’s answer of 12 was closest.

A couple of programming notes this week:

  • Patrick says Google Forms ate his picks last week. Since someone else reported the same thing a few weeks ago, and since he did leave a tiebreaker, I’m inclined to believe him. The picks he resubmitted after the fact made him the winner of last week with 10 points.
  • I’ll be on vacation Monday through Saturday and will be trying to avoid the computer as much as possible. Thus, I may not see your comment, email or Twitter message for quite a while, if at all, before Sunday night. So you may want to email me your no-covers as a back-up in case Google Forms eats your picks like it’s done to a couple of people.

Last week’s tiebreaker question was “How many yards of offense will Oklahoma put up in the Red River Shootout?” The answer was 311. Among Sara, Seth and Writerchad, Seth’s guess of 374 yards was closest, making him the week 7 winner!

In case you’re wondering if winning a particular week is meaningless, it does count toward the final tiebreaker at the end of the season.

I’ll be back in Knoxville this weekend to watch the 12:21 p.m. slapfight between the Bulldogs of Georgia and the Volunteers of Tennessee. So no live results again this week. Try to console yourself…

Last week’s tiebreaker was “How many total net yards will Oklahoma and Miami put up combined?” We have a tie, so we actually get to use this!

griftdrift guessed 555 net yards, and Writerchad guessed 666. The actual total was 687 net yards, which makes Writerchad the week 5 winner.

My guess of 685 yards was closer to the actual total than theirs or anyone else’s. Moral victory! Playing them tough!

Five burning questions that don’t count for anything

Leave your guesses in the comments.

  1. How many reaction shots will the television network show of Willie Martinez pumping his fists and trying to hold back tears after his defensive backs get burned for 30 yards by a Tennessee receiver with a sprained ankle?
  2. How many times will Jonathan Crompton fumble, throw an interception, or run into his own end zone and fall down on the very next play?
  3. How many times will Joe Cox immediately follow up one of Crompton’s fumbles or interceptions with a wobbly duck of a pass thrown to no one in particular that should be intercepted?
  4. How many times will Tennessee actually intercept one of those passes?
  5. How many of those interceptions will be described by Tennessee fans as moral victories after Georgia wins 2-0?

NCAA Picks 2009-2010 week 5 schedule

This is one of the weekends I’ll be out of town. I’ll travel to Knoxville with Reggie to get drunk and watch Tennessee not cover its two-point spread against Auburn, in that order. So there won’t be live results Saturday.

In the meantime, for no bonus points whatsoever, feel free to use the comments section here to partake in a game we play over at Rocky Top Talk, the Hail Mary Haiku. Here are the rules:

You’re behind by four at midfield. Only one second remains on the clock, and you have to heave the ball into a mass of players in the end zone and hope that one of your guys comes down with it. Bonus points for actually observing the traditional 5-7-5 format for haikus, but free form haikus are allowed. This is, after all, a desperation play.

Here’s the one I wrote for UT this week against Auburn:

Down a linebacker,
tackling dummy at QB,
thinking Hail ISO.

You, of course, can apply that to your own team.

Last week’s tiebreaker was “How many passing yards will Arizona State quarterback Danny Sullivan put up against Georgia’s defense?” The answer was 116. Garrett‘s answer of 125 was closest. Since there was no tie, this didn’t end up being used, but I thought you might like to know how it turned out anyway.

It’ll be a couple of years yet before we know if the Lane Kiffin experiment at Tennessee is a success or a failure. I’d caution against reading much from the game against Florida, or out of this season in general. But I am more optimistic about the future now than I was when he was hired. And I’m hoping it works out, because if Georgia football bloggers’ foreheads burst like they have been while the guy is losing, they’ll be beyond apoplectic when he’s winning. That will be fun to watch.

Meanwhile, Carl is still kicking your asses. But griftdrift is rebounding from a miserable first week, winning the second two weeks in a row after our makeshift bowling frame tiebreaker is accounted for.

Last week’s tiebreaker was “How many points will all ACC teams score this week combined?” The answer was 344. I answered 301, which was closest. I guess that’s my consolation prize for being tied for dead last among players who have actually submitted picks every week.

NCAA Picks 2009-2010 week 3 schedule

We need to make some adjustments this week:

  1. Due to having an actual tie even after the tiebreakers in week 2, I’m moving the tiebreakers out of the picks ballot and into the comments section. The tiebreaker will be one question, and you cannot give the same answer that someone else has already given in a previous comment. The week 2 winner between Ben K and griftdrift will be awarded retroactively based on who scores higher in week 3 (like a bowling frame).
  2. I had planned to use the CBS Blog poll to make my schedule, but I am just now finding out it’s typically not published until Wednesday afternoon. That won’t do for our purposes since I likely wouldn’t make out a form until Wednesday night. So I’m going to use the Coaches’ Poll instead. Most of you probably won’t notice, that’s just an FYI.

Next week I’ll factor ATS into the results, it’s just slipped my mind thus far.

Be thankful I didn’t ask you sinners to pick which Bible verse Tebow would print on his eye black. Though if any of you know your Bible verses, feel free to speculate. Ezekiel 25:17 is too easy, so be creative.
